Rochester Tigers Place 3rd at ASA 16UB Northern Nationals in Wichita, KS.

The Rochester Tigers 16U team attended the 16UB Northern National Championships in Wichita, KS July 29th – August 2nd. The Tigers enjoyed the opening ceremonies on Wednesday night with the 20 other 16U teams and 16 - 18U teams. The players were treated to a pizza and a DJ followed.  They had a wonderful opportunity to meet and mingle with the other teams and it was a great time.

Thursday, the Tigers won two pool play-in games by beating Lady Hornets (Valley Center, KS) 2-1 and the Lady Larks (Hays, KS) 5-4 in a tiebreaker.  By virtue of their undefeated pool play, they earned a #1 seed for bracket play.

The Tigers won their first bracket game on Friday beating SW Missouri Eclipse (Willard, MO) 7-1 and improved their record to 4-0 after beating the New Ulm Lobsters (New Ulm, MN) 2-1 on Saturday.   They continued their winning ways on Saturday, by beating the Lady Larks again, 6-1.

The Tigers made it into championship Sunday with just 4 teams remaining. Their next game was a close battle with eventual champion Seymour Flames Red (Eau Claire, WI).  The Tigers lost a close one, 2-1 in a tiebreaker.  Their last chance to get back to the championship failed however, as they then lost to Powerhouse (Green Bay, WI)4-1 in the double elimination format.

The Tigers were lead by Sarah Bohlen’s .500 batting average for the tournament along with her 4-2 pitching record. Morgan Maiers was 1-0.  Team members include: Kelli Anderson, Sarah Bohlen, Marissa Dather, Ellie Hindal, Linsy Hoosier, Emily Jasperson, Morgan Maiers, Hannah Nelson, Nicole Nelson, Taylor Nelson, Courtney Palmer, Courtney Schubauer, and Katie Trangsrud.  Absent: Kelsie Stahl.

Softball Association now has a field of their own

Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

Rochester Youth Fastpitch Softball Association board member Becky Macken looked like a kid who had just opened a Christmas package.

"We're kind of giddy," she said, standing near one of five new playing fields at the Rochester Softball Complex on Monday evening as metal bats clanked against balls and players cheered for teammates.

She pointed toward her husband, Mike Macken, who worked tirelessly for four years to reach this opening night at the complex, which is located at the eastern edge of University Center Rochester's land along U.S. 14.

"This was a goal of his, and a passion of his," she said. "And he did it. He was like a bull in a china shop, and he made it happen."

Reviews Monday night from 14- to 16-year-olds were favorable. The complex doesn't have dugouts yet, nor restrooms and concessions stands. But the fences are up, and the grass is thick enough for now.

Melissa Conger, 15, a member of RYFSA's Rochester Heat team who also plays softball for Mayo High School, said the new complex broadens horizons.

"It kind of gets us out of our comfort zone, because we play at the Mayo fields for our high school league," she said.

The 17-acre site will be used not only by local youths, but will be added to the slate of facilities that the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission can draw upon for regional and national tournaments. Those tournaments in 2008 added an estimated $9 million to Rochester's hospitality industry.

RYFSA -- which has 452 players this year, up 35 from last year -- follows several other Rochester youth sports associations that have partnered with the city to develop complexes at UCR. RYFSA has made a five-year commitment to pay $25,000 toward the complex. It made an initial payment of $50,000.

Previously, RYFSA teams played at parks scattered around Rochester. One of the advantages of a complex is that players of various ages can watch and learn from each other.

"It's quaint," Becky Macken said. "It's just someplace where the girls can have a place they can call their own".
